#UnlockTheBox | GA Voting Rights Hackathon

The New Georgia Project (NGP) is hosting a two-day civic engagement/social justice hackathon on GA Tech’s campus, October 9th and 10th. The NGP is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to registering and civically engaging the New American Majority (people of color, those 18 to 29 years of age, and unmarried women). Unlock the Box is the first ever voting rights hackathon. The event is drawing programmers, designers, civic engagement groups, public officials, and voters, to compete for cash prizes while working to overcome the most common obstacles Georgians face when attempting to vote.

About Unlock the Box:
“Georgia’s electorate must reflect its actual citizenry, and right now – today – it doesn’t. It shouldn’t be this hard to register and it shouldn’t be this hard to vote,” said Nse Ufot, NGP’s Executive Director. “Unlock the Box will illuminate the barriers to access that Georgians face from registration to Election Day, and will bring together progress-oriented individuals with sights set on chipping away at these problems, efficiently and inexpensively.”

Participants will gather at the Bill Moore Student Success Center on Georgia Tech’s campus to develop solutions to voting access challenges. Teams will compete for three grand prizes and meals will be provided throughout the event. The event will culminate with participants presenting their applications to a panel of judges consisting of representatives from industry-leading tech companies, social justice champions, elected officials, and disenfranchised voters.  These applications will then be made available to the public and used to bring registrants to the democratic process in the shortest time – and in the most efficient manner – possible.

This is a great opportunity to experience a crossover between tech and social impact, so you definitely don’t want to miss out.
