Building a company takes a lot of time, resources, energy, finances, and a whole lot of heart. If any of these fall through then it’s a sure-fire way to know that the end is near (or that it’s not even time to begin).
One of the best things about technology is that there are tons of options for help minimize your time, maximize your resources, and even control your spending and startup costs. The only missing ingredient is awareness – that is to say, most entrepreneurs in the startup world are just not fully aware of the possibilities of all these cost and time savings.Great Wide Open
One of the biggest opportunities is the fact that many technology solutions are entirely free through open source. Open Source technology gives you the right to use those solutions without any direct cost. For example, WordPress is a fast-growing content management system that you can build full websites on with very little knowledge (I have a good overview and walkthrough of getting setup here)! Imagine taking out thousands of dollars from your budget for website and even brand awareness by booting up a WordPress-powered site?
It’s quite amazing and it’s why I try to educate many people on the merits of open source. In addition, it’s why I try to get people to come to conferences like Great Wide Open which just happened last week and is one entirely focused on Open Source technology. You can also find a number of open source-centric Meetup groups on Meetup.com as well! These are you opportunity to learn the ins and outs of all that is possible and how to save tons of time and money on your new (or existing) venture.
I hope to see you at one of the many meetups and events this year highlighting open source! It’s always worth considering when you can launch your new venture more cheaply and spend more money on conversions and product development!
