One would think that life for a coder consists of hours typing on a keyboard, lots of bright computer screens and the occasional energy drink. For Mike Cuddy, these three things are all true, but not just for coding. He is currently in the midst of writing a 300-page sci-fi thriller (complete with three alien races!) In addition to becoming a blossoming author, Mike has just finished the full-time code immersion program at Tech Talent South and is eager to put his skills to work in Atlanta.
For someone with a mind this creative, the future looks stellar. Check out his profile below and keep him on your list for new tech talent.
What past tech projects have you worked on?
For the capstone project at Tech Talent South, I helped make an app to allow one to find individuals who have similar interests based on their location. I did this using the geocoder gem in ruby on rails. I have also made some simple, but fun games with Python.
What are your best technical or creative skills?
I love to write stories! I am currently writing a sci-fi thriller about the cultural, political and military ambitions of three alien races and how these factors converge to result in conflict between the species. It is currently 120,000 words long, which is equivalent to roughly 300 pages in a novel. One could say that I have a very active imagination and I enjoy approaching problems from different angles. I also love to learn and discuss new and cutting edge ideas. In particular, I enjoy talking to other individuals or reading about how new technology will shape humanity in the present and in the future.
What’s next on your list to learn?
I plan to continue developing my skills in Ruby on Rails, Python and web design. My next major goal is to learn how to use the opencv gem in ruby on rails to identify patterns in images. I recently attended a ruby meetup group where a presenter used this gem to identify malaria in cells. This really interested me since my wife has a Ph.D. in cell biology and could utilize this technology to potentially distinguish cancer cells from healthy cells.
Interested in startups?
Yes, I am very interested in startups! I believe that working at a startup will not only give me additional technical experience, which will be valuable as I’m pursuing a career in the tech industry, but will additionally enable me to learn how new companies operate.
What’s your ideal internship/job?
I would love to work at a startup in an internship position that allows me to work as well as to learn at the same time. I am very eager to continue developing my skills in ruby, ruby on rails and web design. I’m additionally open to learning new technical skills as well.
When are you available to start?
I would like to start ASAP!
