Chelsea Hoag | Renaissance Woman Ready to Roam

Chelsea Hoag can write, develop, manage a team, organize a project, produce a video, catalyze a community, and rock a denim shirt like the boss she is. When she’s not holding down the fort as the managing editor of Berry College’s student paper, she dabbling in freelance web dev work and building games in her creative computing class. Chelsea’s about to graduate and she’s ready to leave Rome for Atlanta’s streets of gold (err pollen dust…). Who is going to snatch her up first?

Class of:
2015 (May 9, 2015)

What is your major?
Public Relations

What are you currently working on outside of class?
I’m the managing editor of Berry College’s student run newspaper. Our whole news section is studying abroad in Scotland right now so the editor-in-chief and I are writing the majority of the news as well.

Up until a month ago, I did some freelance web development for Tommie Turvey. He trained horses for The Walking Dead, Selma and has worked as an extra for The Dark Knight. Tommie also gives lessons, boards horses and does horse shows around the country so I helped him consolidate his web presence and rebrand a bit. Before, he called himself the “Equine Extremist”. We thought that might turn off some of his older horse lesson customers and decided to use just his name instead.

What past creative & tech projects have you worked on?
I’m the co-president of Berry College’s gay-straight alliance called LISTEN. We are only in our third year of being an officially sponsored club so a social media presence didn’t even exist. I created a Twitter, Facebook page and we recently raised over $700 for the Rome AIDS Resource Council through t-shirt sales alone which I helped curate.

Before working with Tommie, I helped a friend’s mom create a promotional video for the card game she invented called, “Infinity the Card Game”. I also teamed up with Rome City Schools to create a promotional video highlighting all of the school’s achievements and spotlight the new superintendent.

What are your best technical or creative skills?
My best technological skills are primarily in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro X and Acrobat XI Pro. As far as camera equipment, I’ve worked with both Cannon and Nikon DSLR. I also use my grandfather’s old film camera from time to time.

I feel like my strongest creative skill is writing and knowing how to do so whether for online or in print. I began my college career as an English major so writing is my oldest companion by far.

What’s next on your list to learn?
I took a creative computing class at Berry using a program called Processing where we wrote code in Java. My group and I recreated the game Duck Hunt as our final project. I’d really love to learn more about web development and also the analytics of websites using metrics (clicks vs. time spent) especially with written content. If no one is reading it, why is it there?

Any post graduation plans?
I’m willing to relocate, but my heart is in Atlanta. My goal is to work and live in Atlanta right after graduation. I also have a passion for human rights so I’m very excited about checking out the non-profits in the city where I can volunteer some time.

What kind of job are you most interested in?
I’m most interested in a startup to midsize company. I’m looking for a community driven, collaborative environment.
