Matt Hobbs is a Senior UX Manager at National Builder Supply, an Atlanta-based ecommerce company. Hobbs is also a musical improviser at Dad’s Garage here in Atlanta and was previously a strategist/planner for THINK Interactive, Inc. This University of Florida grad recently presented at at the Content Strategy Applied conference, an annual conference hosted by eBay at their headquarters in San Jose, CA.
In his presentation, Hobbs talked through scaling content for large ecommerce sites, explaining systems the National Builder Supply team has built to drive clean data-base driven content and navigation.
A few notes from his talk:
- Noisy data leads to sloppy product pages, ugly navigation.
- Focus on the content that helps users make decisions.
- If you can validate your hunches with data-driven consumer insights, you can be confident your content will resonate with your audience.
- Build tools to streamline manual efforts for updating and editing product content.

Apart from being an ecommerce genius, Hobbs (@heymatthobbs) is also an active songwriter and musician. So naturally he ended his presentation with a song. In this incredibly hilarious and super informational ukulele parody of Phantom of the Opera’s “Music of the Night,” he summarized high points of his presentation. Check it out.
