Home Sweet Home (Tech): These Are The Startups Reshaping The Places We Live

Whether you are moving in or moving out, there’s a startup that might be able to help.

Yes, house hunting, selling, or renting can be daunting. But there are a growing number of founders are looking to help renters and homeowners alike with their cutting-edge technologies.

So wherever you are on the house hunting process, these are some of the Southeast-based startups you need to keep an eye on:

Bedrock (Atlanta)

Founder: Aravind Ganesan

The thesis behind Bedrock — making home projects easy — will be music to the ears of anyone who has ever attempted a home renovation project. Bedrock’s platform and its AI general contractor, Rocky, helps users design, build, and share home improvement projects. Just snap a photo, and get instant, expert advice on costs, budgeting options, and DIY solutions. The startup has already helped homeowners across the country.

U Scope Technologies (Conyers, Georgia)

Founder: Earl Randolph

For the past 12 years, the founder of U Scope has worked as a property adjuster, navigating the aftermath of hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods across the U.S. Through this experience, it became clear that traditional property inspection methods were outdated and stressful for homeowners, adjusters, and contractors alike. Its Photo iD app helps contractors document the full story of a project through photos.

Roomadillo (Chapel Hill, North Carolina)

Co-founders: David Hao and Manas Takalpati

If you’ve ever had a sublease horror story when trying to find a short-time housing option, you understand why Roomadillo exists. A group of UNC students wanted to tackle the subleasing problem for college students looking for off-campus housing options or for short-term rental options during college internships. Triangle-based publication GrepBeat highlighted the startup’s team this summer.

PadSplit (Atlanta)

Founder Atticus LaBanc

Atlanta-based PadSplit brings affordable, innovative solutions to renters, making city-living more attainable through co-living options. The company works with cities that have increasingly low housing inventory to give workers more options in otherwise unaffordable locations. Founder Atticus LaBanc says that PadSplit aims to find “fast and cost-efficient ways to create supply in a market with underutilized, wasted spaces.”

Forget asking friends of friends or looking around sketchy Facebook groups for a new roommate. Hearthmates is the next generation mobile app for roommate matchmaking and collaborative housing search. Through our mobile app, users can form a roommate group and work together on a shared housing plan more easily and painlessly. Founder Cesar Flores is in the Techstars Atlanta 2024 cohort.

Threshold360 (Tampa)

Threshold360 is another startup transforming the house hunting process providing interactive, controllable 360° virtual tours. The Tampa-based virtual tour startup gives users a true feel of the space they might decide to call home. This tool doubles the likelihood of in-person tours while allowing both property managers and users to invest time in leads with true potential.
