Better Health, Delivered: Meet the Alpharetta-based startup delivering food as medicine

“We all intuitively know that what we eat affects our health, but it’s actually learning the right things to eat that’s the hard part,” Ryan Moskowitz, Chief Brand Officer at ModifyHealth told Hypepotamus. “For many, the “want to” for a healthier lifestyle and improved quality of life is there. It’s the “how to” that’s lacking. Being told to adopt a healthy diet is common. Data shows the ability to do so without help and support are rare.”

Helping people with that “hard part” is exactly why ModifyHealth was founded. The Alpharetta-based healthcare company focuses on food as medicine with its expertly curated meal delivery service and coaching.

Moskowitz describes the healthcare-focused startup as simply “better health, delivered.” ModifyHealth helps to make lifestyle change effective, enjoyable, and sustainable by making complex diets like the Low-FODMAP diet and Mediterranean diet, simple.

Working directly with patients and partnering with payors, employers, and healthcare systems, ModifyHealth’s turnkey program decreases cost and improves outcomes for chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, obesity, and irritable bowel syndrome, where dietary management is a recommended treatment.

Patients using the meal service aren’t giving up delicious food (in fact, comfort food favorites like BBQ Chicken and Mac & Cheese are still very much on the menu). Instead, the meals are dietitian-designed to meet condition-specific dietary needs. Beyond just developing the intense logistics system needed to keep meals fresh and delivered on time nationwide, ModifyHealth has assembled an impressive clinical advisory team and a group of in-house dietitians to help with personalized remote coaching.

ModifyHealth has certainly found a following amongst patients and currently ships meals all across the country.

A New Type Of Food Delivery Service

Working in the highly regulated industries of food and healthcare creates a unique set of business challenges. But Moskowitz said that over the last four years, “the ModifyHealth team has grown from a small startup to an established brand that’s having a massive impact on patient’s lives.”

The team behind ModifyHealth are no strangers to the world of healthcare. Many of the executive team members – including CEO, G.B. Pratt, Chief Brand Officer, Ryan Moskowitz, and Chief Commercial Officer, Hagan Jordan – were all part of Atlanta-based medtech company, EndoChoice (NYSE: GI) which was acquired by Boston Scientific for $210 million in 2016.

Moskowitz said the core team spent time talking to physicians and quickly learned that many struggled to help their patients with digestive issues like IBS or other chronic conditions adhere to often “complicated yet effective” diets.

“We put our resources together to see if we could codify these very difficult, evidence-based diets,” Moskowitz told Hypepotamus. It’s not uncommon for us to hear from patients who have struggled with health issues for years are now achieving results within weeks.

New Funding, New Opportunities

ModifyHealth is entering 2023 with a $10 million Series B from lead investor Cincinnati-based RC Capital. Previous investor Nashville Capital Network also joined the round.

RC Capital is already very familiar with the leadership team behind ModifyHealth. The firm previously invested in EndoChoice.

Moskowitz said the new round of funding will go towards further product development and growing the team to help “scale the impact we’re having on patient’s lives.”
