Dr. Amy Baxter, MD, is a pain researcher, pediatrician, and Atlantan who, as a mother of three, saw countless children in unnecessary pain when receiving shots. She wanted to find a fast, effective drug-free solution to provide pain relief. In 2009, she invented Buzzy, a bee-shaped, palm sized device that halts unpleasant sensations with cold and vibration. Used to combat needle phobia, arthritis, and other ailments, Buzzy is inexpensive, reusable, and made in the USA. Since its launch, its been nothing but success for Dr. Baxter and her Atlanta-based team.
The Scoop:
- Initial prototype was established through a research grant to Georgia State from the Mayday Fund
- Buzzy has been adopted by over 1,200 hospitals and more than 36,000 users
- Dr. Baxter is one of Inc. Magazine’s Top Women in Tech to Watch
- In 2014, Buzzy was awarded a $250,000 Mission Main Street Grant sponsored by Chase
- Also in 2014, Dr. Baxter pitched Buzzy on ABC’s ‘Shark Tank’ and turned down the sharks’ offers because of their low valuation
