10 Reasons Students Should Sign-up For Summer Startup Academy

by Devin Hardy

With all this talk about the Summer Startup Academy, you might be wondering why you should enroll to be part of the Class of 2013. Since I’ve become a college graduate this weekend, I was assigned the task of compiling a list of reasons why the Summer Startup Academy would be of interest to college students.

Here are ten solid reasons students should sign-up for the Summer Startup Academy:

1. Because believe it or not, “they” are out to get you
2. Networking opportunities
3. The chance to show off your new handshake
4. Intensive learning sessions
5. Mingle with those of the opposite ‘sects’
6. Even superheroes need help sometimes
7. Earn your Summer Startup Academy diploma
8. Good food, good people, good times
9. To witness the teachings of expert instructors and startup “gods”
10. IT’S All FREE!

The ten in high definition

As I dipped my quill in the inkwell to start writing this post, I pondered: “Why wouldn’t any commonsensible college student covet the opportunity to spend five evenings of their summer at the Summer Startup Academy?” Every marginally conceivable answer – using an astute system of analysis – was found to be unmerited, some even laughable.

Here are the ten reasons students SHOULD sign-up for the Summer Startup Academy in (NOW IN HIGH DEFINITION).

1. Because believe it or not, “they” are out to get you
Those pack of rabid deer you’ve been trying to avoid, or the aliens from another planet that abduct you every night and experiment on your frontal lobe, yes they are out to get you. Or what about those wretched zombies that stand outside of your window every full moon, cold-bloodedly drooling from their mouths and aimlessly seeking to eat every inch of your flesh? Yes, they’re coming as well. What better place to hide yourself from your phobias than the Summer Startup Academy? There is none.

2. Networking opportunities
With all facets of the startup community to be represented at this year’s Summer Startup Academy, the opportunity to meet the person who can provide that job you’ve been dreaming about, or to converse with that person who can supply the insight needed to propel your career going forward is, all possible here. The many social events to take place during the summer allows Summer Startup Academy participants to unwind and let their hair down in the presence of experienced technology professionals and startup superstars. They will be more than willing to allow young, ambitious students to pick their brains about a wide-range of topics. The only rule: No weak handshakes. Which brings us to our next reason…

3. The chance to showoff your new handshake
Handshakes should remain simple yet form and authoritative; one should refrain from the intricacies of the modern day handshake commonly known as “dap.” When networking at the Summer Startup Academy, the handshake is the first impression – it’s an outward display of one’s confidence and not to mention the time he/she has spent in the gym recently (but remember, don’t squeeze too tight). Remember: the people you meet at Summer Startup Academy aren’t your friends just yet, so please abscond from the classic Joey and Chandler handshake. Keep it simple.

4. Intensive learning sessions
On five Tuesdays, beginning June 4th, Summer Startup Academy will provide five educational sessions to students. The first general session will include Demo Day presentations by Flashpoint GT companies and three introductory conversations. The second general session will cover Agile Development. The third general session is an overview on Design Thinking. The fourth session will address Startup Engineering and Lean Startup. And finally, during the fifth general session, we’ll cover Content Strategies & Tactics. Undoubtedly, knowledge will be dropped, be sure that you’re there to pick it up.

5. Mingle with those of the opposite ‘sects’
No matter if you’re a coder, designer, business lead, or storyteller; the opportunity to mix it up with an unfamiliar persona is possible here. The social events allow for students to gain a comprehensive view of the types of people and skills required to create a successful tech startup. No need for those third-party dating sites (yes, we’re talking to you Farmers Only), come mingle with us and make your startup match made in heaven here, at the Summer Startup Academy.

6. Even superheroes need help sometimes
Superman has Jimmy Olsen, Radioactive Man has Fallout Boy, The Crimson Chin has Clef The Boy Chin Wonder, Ashe has Pickachu, even Indiana Jones has Wan Li. Of course Batman has Robin. I say all this why? To inform all you talented students out there that raw talent can only get you so far in in the startup world, and that Summer Startup Academy is here to supply that extra kick when you need it most,  we’ll dry-clean your cape for you as well.

7. Earn your Summer Startup Academy diploma
On August 6th Summer Startup Academy Graduation will commence before all students head back to school for the fall semester, we’ll gather for an end of summer celebration where participants will receive their Summer Startup Diplomas. To obtain your Summer Startup Academy diploma, you’ll need to attend all five educational sessions, two social events, and two meetups/networking events. Start preparing your invitations now and making arrangements for your family to come see you graduate from Summer Startup Academy this summer, they’re going to be so proud!

8. Good food, good people, good times
On June 4 after the opening sessions of the Summer Startup Academy, we’ll walk across the street to the Renaissance Hotel 866 Rooftop Lounge for a party sponsored by Dell. Grab a drink, nosh on some appetizers, and celebrate the start of summer in style. For the other four Tuesday sessions, we’ll unwind afterward at Cypress Street Pint & Plate. There’s even rumor of a Startup Camping Trip at Serenbe during the final week.

9. To witness the teachings of expert instructors and startup “gods”
Now when I say gods, I’m not referring to the supernatural, all-seeing, all-knowing, supreme beings common in many myths and legends. No, not by the slightest bit. However, I am referring to the track record of tech startup success that many of Summer Startup Academy’s instructors share. Take Jon Birdsong, CEO at Rivalry, a sales process management software company. Or Rob Kischuk, Founder of Badgy, a social achievement platform helping consumer brand marketers utilize Facebook and Twitter to increase sales by optimizing their posting and promotion strategy. Needless to say, the doctrines to be delivered during Summer Startup Academy will be nothing less than otherworldly.

10. IT’S All FREE!
It’s free. No tuition or fees to pay by you or the startup.
