ABOUT THE SPEAKER
While pursuing her MFA at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Kate Sweeney spent time with obit writers, funeral directors and ordinary Americans who found themselves involved with death and memorialization. The result is the nonfiction book American Afterlife (University of Georgia Press), for which she was awarded a Georgia Author of the Year Award in 2015. About American Afterlife, Paste Magazine wrote, “Sweeney writes the perfect story for our time, in the best possible way,” and bestselling author Thomas Lynch calls the book “a reliable witness and well-wrought litany to last things and final details.”
Kate was a reporter, producer, and host at WABE, Atlanta’s NPR station for more than a decade, where her work won five Edward R. Murrow awards as well as a number of Associated Press awards. Her writing has appeared in Oxford American Magazine, Utne Reader Online, Atlanta Magazine and New South, among other outlets. She has curated and hosted two live literary event series: Tantrum, a podcast and live event for writers who happen to be parents, and True Story. Kate has taught Creative Writing and English at Emory Continuing Education, Clayton State University and the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
