Game of Thrones Inspires A New Programming Language

Do you feel that there aren’t enough programming languages or frameworks to get the job done right? Especially ones that are sheer fun and inspired by a TV show that’s chock full of topless ladies and mass casualties? The creative masterminds at Hummingbird Technologies certainly do.  This local dev shop (who also happen to be the first residents of the new startup space in the Flatiron) have coined a fun programming language called Hodor based on the simple minded character in Game of Thrones. Hummingbird created the language for April Fools, but it actually works. The language’s structure and syntax are comprised entirely of a few choice symbols and word “Hodor” over and over.

Hodor was recently chosen as the Software Development Times GitHub Project of the Week and given this cheeky review: “Technically written in JavaScript and run on Node.js, Hodor is a language for all. Hodor does not discriminate. Hodor doesn’t care whether you’re a coder from The North or from Dorne, from House Arryn, Lannister, Martell or Tyrell. Hodor knows no allegiances, not to programmers praying in reverence to The Seven, the Old Gods, the Drowned God or Red R’hollor the Lord of Light. Hodor simply is Hodor: a blissfully simple programming language for all of Westeros, Essos and the modern world.”

“As engineers, we want to focus on what we do best — creating disruptive technology that just plain works,” comments Hummingbird. By “using jumbled permutations of the word “hodor” over and over again we have simplified programming syntax to make it easier than ever before.”
