The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) hosted each year in Las Vegas is the place for startups and large enterprises alike to launch their new gadgets and products. After all, it is the place where the VCR, the CD player, smartphones, and plenty of other well-known household gadgets have made their public debut.
Now Domono, an Atlanta-based wearable camera and case startup, is looking to capture the moment as it heads to CES 2024.
Domono will be in the spotlight at the trade show for several reasons. Not only is it the first Black-owned camera company, it has big plans to transform both the security and content creation worlds.

Capturing New Opportunities
The origins for the company dates back to 2014, when 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot by police in Ferguson, Missouri. Founder Johnson Sainvil wanted to design a better body cam to keep people safe day to day.
Sainvil was frustrated with the lack of flexibility provided by traditional camera phones. He wanted a way to detach the camera from the phone to give users more flexibility in terms of what they filmed.
Sainvil comes from the world of physical security and built up the technology and the product slowly over the course of the last five years with a group of engineers who previously worked with Blackberry. While Sainvil started building Domono with security in mind, he quickly realized there were other powerful use cases for the product.

Parents can take the detachable camera off their phone and put it on their kids to monitor them coming home from school, making it something like an on-the-go Ring camera or a “silent guardian” always recording. A real estate agent might use it to give a better virtual tour of a house. Influencers might use it to capture new angles and material for social media.
This can be important for content creators who are looking to capture spontaneous moments or don’t have the time or space to set up an elaborate camera shot.
The team sees Domono as a product that can help revolutionize visual storytelling and how people share their unique point of view with the world.

The Road To CES
The Atlanta team started to form organically, Sainvil said. Damita Davis has joined as CFO, alongside Mike (Mouse) Gregory as Director of Business Development and Kinne Alcime as COO.
The team launched its official Kickstarter campaign this weekend during a party at the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs in Atlanta for those looking to support and back the product.
Now at at CES, the team is ready to build connections with potential investors and partners to bring the product to more people.
