Atlanta-based “Plastic Scorecard” Startup Gets Acquired

Co-founders Noah Godfrey, Anjali Mahadevia, and Dominic Santschi launched Ampliphi in 2021 into what Godfrey described as a “ready and awaiting” opportunity within the sustainability world.

That opportunity? Using tech to combat plastic pollution.

Ampliphi and its Plastic Scorecard program helps businesses track, report, and ultimately reduce their plastic tax liability. The platform initially focused on acquiring consumer brands in the plastic-heavy food, beverage, and beauty space. But new potential customers arose as regulation and reporting standards shifted over the last several years.

That left large corporations needing to find ways to comply with the “uncharted waters”  of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Plastic Tax (EPR) reporting while still maximizing their bottom line.

“Even today, the market is young but quickly following in the footsteps of the carbon market. Although we were a little early to the party, we were able to help develop the methodologies and protocols that will ensure corporates can transparently and actionably combat the plastic crisis and advance their circular economy goals,” Godfrey told Hypepotamus.

Acquisition In Climate Tech

After two years of building the platform, the Atlanta-based startup is rounding out 2023 with news it is getting acquired.

Ampliphi Co-founder Noah Godfrey

The team announced it has been acquired by ClimeCo, a Pennsylvania-based company in the environmental commodities space. Details of the acquisition were not disclosed, but the acquisition will allow the Ampliphi team to move “beyond just the plastics arena to help clients attack the climate crisis on many different fronts – in an integrated, transparent and truly substantive way,” Godfrey added.

Ampliphi first connected with ClimeCo thanks to an introduction from Jen Singh, ATDC’s sustainability catalyst.

This acquisition is a testament to the hard work of our incredible team and the support of our customers, partners, and advisors, who all shared our vision,” Godfrey told Hypepotamus. “While this marks a significant new chapter, some things remain constant: our commitment to pushing the boundaries of how companies combat the plastic crisis and our dedication to transforming how businesses can positively impact the world. With ClimeCo, we are poised to amplify our impact further and bring more innovative solutions to the forefront of corporate sustainability.”

Startups Take On Plastics

Single-use plastics are a growing problem for businesses and individuals alike. North Americans have the highest plastic consumption at 139 kg per capita per year, according to the University of Michigan’s Center for Sustainable Systems. Only 9% of global plastic waste gets recycled, while the vast majority of single-use plastics end up in landfills or incinerated.

Ampliphi is one of several Southeast-based startups looking to tackle the growing plastic crisis.

There is ECGO (previously Conserve Innovations), a recycling app, and CIRT, an Athens-based startup helping businesses better understand what materials can and cannot be recycled.

At the beginning of 2023 Hypepotamus highlighted Nexus Circular, an Atlanta-based company that has found a way to break down hard-to-recycle materials. The company landed a $150 million investment from Cox Enterprises in January.
