While the Affordable Care Act has allowed for greater access to healthcare for uninsured Americans, it certainly has not improved our access to physicians. According to the New York Times, “patients waited an average of 29 days nationally to see a dermatologist for a skin exam, 66 days to have a physical in Boston and 32 days for a heart evaluation by a cardiologist in Washington.” In order to combat this issue, Atlanta-based Alii Healthcare wants to create a powerful connection between consumers and doctors, improving access and quality with their innovative technology.
Founded by Sylvan Waller (CEO) and Josh Berman (COO), “Alii Healthcare gives people the power to have healthcare delivered on their terms, giving them access to immediate and definitive care without the constraints of the traditional healthcare system, via a secure mobile platform,” explain the co-founders. “Using our technology and service delivery design, we have created a new access point for healthcare with new rules: consumers are empowered, physicians are empowered, and everyone else gets out of the way. This is an evolution in access and transparency. Our smart disruption of the healthcare system will change the landscape of healthcare by improving the care people receive.”
Waller and Berman started Alii Healthcare with a simple idea. “We want to empower people to have healthcare delivered on their terms,” they say. “We want to treat our customers with respect and break down many of the barriers in the traditional healthcare system. We want to bring healthcare to our customers and not make them come to us. It’s a mission that the team lives by each day, because it’s a mission that we think can change the landscape of healthcare.”
Telemedicine is growing quickly. Research predicts that there is a large potential market that desires care but is unable to receive it or unwilling to on the terms dictated by the market today. “The average wait to see a primary care physician is 18.5 days,” Waller and Berman lament. “Each year, over 150 million consumers in the US have low acuity medical conditions that Alii Healthcare can definitely treat using our technology platform.”
“What sets us apart is our expertise in healthcare delivery and consumer-centered design. This gives us a competitive advantage and the ability to rapidly scale in the race to capture market share as it expands,” they explain. “Our biggest differentiator is that we use residency trained, board certified ER physicians who are trained to treat an incredible diversity of problems quickly and efficiently with little information. They are also trained, more than any other type of physician, to recognize who needs immediate and emergent help.”
Both Waller and Berman were educated in Atlanta, at Emory School of Medicine and Georgia Tech respectively, and feel that the city has been pivotal in the birth and growth of Alii Healthcare. “We started the company in the Advanced Technology Development Center, where Sylvan had previously worked as an Entrepreneur in Residence,” they recall. “We’ve leveraged the state and university support there, as well as the midtown location that allows us to recruit the most talented people in the South to join our team. We’ve had great success working within the community to get our story out, and remain committed to being a part of the Atlanta startup story.”
Alii Healthcare’s team is growing and on the lookout for top talent. “We are always looking for great people to join our team,” say the co-founders. “Please visit our website to learn about who we are and what kind of people fit best in our unique work environment. We hire great people who can help us grow, so even if you’re not sure where you’d fit in, drop us a line!”
