Innovation in the Burbs

The Plan:
Alpharetta is planning to open its own innovation center to draw entrepreneurship and mobile technology development to the area. The affluent suburb known for corporate business and manicured lawns is focused on rebranding themselves as “The Technology City of the South.”

The 3,000-square-foot lab is expected to be located near co-working space ROAM, and be will equipped with a variety of mobile devices and software that entrepreneurs can use to test out their mobile apps and technologies.

The Man:
Peter Tokar III is the economic development director at City of Alpharetta, the president of the nonprofit Alpharetta Technology Commission, and the driving force behind the focus on innovation. Tokar came to Alpharetta by way of South Florida where he led similar efforts for the City of Davie, building an economic development program from scratch.
