Tokenization in Media: A Case Study – Virtual

August 6, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

This event is for anyone in the media interested in learning how to recognize tokenization within the media framework, leverage your access and power to act in solidarity with marginalized communities, and take personal responsibility to do better. This conversation will focus on how tokenization plays out across various mediums in food media but is applicable to the wider topic of media representation across all industries.

The question we have posed to our panelists is: How Can Food Media Better Present Non-White Cultures Without Tokenizing Them?

As defined by Merriam Webster, tokenization is: the policy or practice of making only a symbolic effort (as to desegregate)

The full toolkit from Studio ATAO on recognizing, disrupting, and preventing tokenization in food media is available here.

Our panel guests will be discussing:

What does tokenization in food media look like?
How do we disrupt the incentivization system behind tokenization?
What can media outlets do to stop tokenization now?
What can creatives do to avoid being tokenized?
What are new systems that can be put in place to prevent tokenization in the future?
