Talk 1: Docker and the State of Containerization for 2023 by Michael Forrester
Application development (AppDev) trends have guided industries (tech
and non-tech alike) toward a more cloud-native and distributed model for nearly a decade. Underpinning all of this is Docker, introduced in the early 2010s, later with Kubernetes, which has driven container adoption to all new levels in the 2020s. What is Docker and Containerization’s role in 2023 now that the hype train has died down, but adoption continues to rise? This presentation will give a brief but humorous overview of Docker’s history, tied with Kubernetes, a brief explanation of each technology and its role in today’s infrastructure, and the trends expected in 2023 and beyond.
Topics covered:

  • History of Docker
  • What is Docker/What is Kubernetes
  • Rise of Containerization standards
  • Other containerization technologies beyond Docker
  • What to expect in 2023 and beyond

Michael Forrester has more than 20 years of experience in cutting-edge containerization, cloud, and enterprise infrastructure technologies, as a Principal Architect, DevOps Advocate, Director, and Hands-on Practitoner. Michael’s expertise includes, but is not limited to Kubernetes, and Docker. Currently, he works for AWS as a Certification Architect for AWS. Michael considers himself a “recovering technologist” whose career passion now is to be an engineer of empowerment to the end-user, an evangelist of taking care of every person in a company, and a leader who listens and creates other leaders.

Talk 2: Terraform Workspaces and Modules: What are they and do I need them? by Carlos Traitel
Terraform is one of the most highly used tools for Infrastructure As Code. But as with most tools in the industry, there’s no “one” way of doing things. Just determining your setup can cause disagreements within teams. In this talk, we’ll go over Terraform Workspaces and modules while creating multiple local DTRs and Kubernetes clusters to fit your development needs. You’ll learn

  • What are terraform workspaces
  • What are terraform modules
  • Why you should use them
  • Why you don’t need them

Before Carlos moved into Information Technology, he was a United States Marine back in 2001 and was involved in the 2003 conflict in Iraq. After moving around from career to career, which ranged from banking to factory work, he started his IT career as a Release Engineer in 2013. A few years later he transferred into the DevOps field. Carlos gained experience and success leading projects, and project teams, implementing and overseeing technology programs, and now has a proven catalyst in designing, developing, planning, and directing projects that provide innovative IT and client solutions. He has extensive knowledge of CI/CD practices and procedures, and application deployments, and is currently focusing on IAC within cloud environments.
